Sri Lanka shares lost as Dialog dips.

Friday 14th August 2009.

ASI lost 9.62 points to close at 2501.19 while Millanka lost 26.93 to close at 2816.66. Turnover was 456.4 million rupees. More than 2.9 million shares of Dialog Telekom traded today but closed 50 cents lower at Rs 5.50.

Chevron Lubricant Lanka Plc was up the local unit of US based Chevron Inc. gained three rupees to close at Rs 135.00. Commercial Bank of Ceylon ended the day two rupees higher at Rs 143.50.
Eagle insurance gained 3.50 to end at Rs 154.75. Samath Bank added 1.50 to close at Rs 137.00.
Distilleries lost 50 cents to close at Rs 85.50. Lanka Cement lost one rupee to close at Rs.30.
Foreigners bought Rs 9.5 million worth of stocks wile sold stocks valued only Rs 1.4 million.

All share index was up by mere 0.01% while Milanka lost 0.04% to close at 2369.11 & 2639.82 respectively. Turnover was relatively low when compared to previous few days. Today’s total market turnover was Rs 168.4 million.

Ceylinco Insurance was up by 10 rupees to close at Rs 200.00. Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC gained 2.25 to close at Rs 130.00. DFCC ended the day 75 cents higher at Rs 131.00.
Sri Lanka Telecom & Colombo Dockyard closed unchanged at Rs 45.75 & 108.00 respectively.
John Keells Holdings & Distilleries (DIST) lost 50 cents each. JKH closed at Rs 129.50 while DIST closed the day at Rs 83.50.

Selinsing PLC closed Rs 46.25 lower at Rs 200.25.
Almost all Asian Stock Exchanges reported positive numbers today. Few Asian Markets gained more than 3%.

Colombo Stock Market experienced sharp Bull Run immediately after complete defeat of LTTE on last May. Since then local investors pushed the market higher but came down later due to lack of foreign interest due to ongoing World Economic recession.

Sri Lanka Stock Market Report – 07-07-2009.

ASI closed the day at 2392.11 while MPI lost 12.47 points to close at 2682.67. Turnover was LKR 223 million.

Colombo Dockyard was up by 2.75 to close at Rs 110.25. Eagle Insurance (Subsidiary of AVIVA Group) gained 11.00 rupees to close at Rs 151.00. John Keells Holdings closed the day 25 cents higher at Rs 133.50.

National Development Bank (NDB) closed flat at Rs 159.75.
Commercial Bank of Ceylon lost two rupees to close at Rs 132.00. Sri Lanka Telecom lost 50 cents to close at Rs 46.75.

Meanwhile according to the Bloomberg Mr. Jim Rogers (Chairman of Rogers Holdings) very positive on Colombo Stock Exchange & Stocks in Sri Lanka are the only equities he would consider buying at the moment.

Colombo Stock Market Report – 02-07-2009.

After last month Bull Run technical correction in stock prices still going on. ASI closed marginally lower at 2408.91(-9.82) while Milanka index was down by 4.99 points to close at 2709.57. However turnover was still healthy at Rs 341.6 million.

Mercantile Sipping the only listed shipping company gained two rupees to close at Rs 103.00. Lanka Orix Leasing Company added three rupees to its value and closed at Rs 104.00. National Development Bank was up by 1.50 to close at Rs 155.00.

Aitken Spence PLC which was gained heavily last month lost 8 rupees today to close at Rs 640.00. Tokyo Cements also lost eight rupees to close at Rs 152.00. Eagle insurance PLC closed Rs 5.00 lower at 140.00 rupees.

Investors are waiting for fresh news from economic front to kick start another Bull Run.

Once again John Keells Holdings was up by 9 rupees to close at Rs 137.25 with heavy trading. Over 6.4 million JKH shares traded during the day & contributed Rs 865.5 million to the total turnover. ASI was up by 61.05 points (2.61%) to close at 2403.97 while more sensitive Milanka index gained 95.01 to close at 2713.09. Turnover was very impressive at Rs 2 billion.

With massive gains since last month probably Colombo Stock Exchange will be the best performing stock market in the world for this year.

Foreigners are also safe here with stable currency. Few months ago Central Bank allowed rupee to float freely. After steep decline from Rs 108 to 120 to 1 US$ now trading strongly at 115 per 1 US$.

Banking sector gained further. Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc was up by 6.50 to close at Rs 135.50 while DFCC gained 6.75 to close at Rs 135.00. NDB closed the day 10.25 higher at Rs 145.50. Hatton National Bank also up by 3.75 to close at Rs 121.25.

Index heavy weight Sri Lanka Telecom was up by 2.50 to close at Rs 47.25.
