In early trading ASI touched 2592.94 (15 months High) but closed the day 35.01 points higher at 2588.04. MPI was up by 30.94 points to end the day at 2935.15. Turnover was LKR 1.14 billion.

Six million four hundred & seventy two thousand & three hundred shares of Hotel Services (Ceylon) Plc traded today within price range of Rs 18.50 to 21.00 & closed the day 2.25 higher at Rs 20.50.

Diversified Blue Chip John Keels Holdings contributed Rs 224.6 for today’s turnover by trading 1,661,900 shares. JKH closed 75 cents higher at Rs 136.50. Over two million shares of Dialog Telekom traded & closed at Rs 5.50, up 25 cents.

Retail investors chased on hotel sector stocks. Beruwela Walk Inn was up by 6.75 to close at 66.75 while Browns Beach Hotels Plc gained 4.75 to close at Rs 75.00. Tangerine Beach Hotel Plc closed the day 7.50 higher at Rs 67.75.

In banking & finance sector, Sampath Bank Plc was up by 5.75 to close at Rs 142.00 while Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc added 3.25 to its value & closed at Rs 150.25.
Sri Lanka’s only Ship Builder Colombo Dockyard Plc is still strong & closed at Rs 126.50, up Rs 4.00.

Brokers said investors are optimistic on higher foreign inflow to the local equity market after international rating agency upgraded its outlook on Sri Lanka from negative to stable.
There were 117 gainers & only 24 losers during the trading day.

There were 57 losers & 40 gainers during the trading session. There were net foreign outflow as foreigners bought Rs 117.6 million worth of stocks & sold stocks valued at Rs 131.4 million.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s Central Bank announced county’s foreign is gong to rise to $ 3 billion with recent local bond purchase ($875 Million) by foreign investors.

CSE Report 19-08-2009.

ASI lost 7.64 points to close at 2523.04 while Milanka index lost 4.41 points to end the day at 2840.10. Turnover was 365.9 million rupees.

Large parcels (2,165,200) of Richard Peiris & Co Plc traded today within price range of Rs 32.75 to 34.75 & closed one rupee higher at Rs 34.00. Ceylon Tobacco Plc the subsidiary of British American Tobacco company gained 6.50 to close at Rs 151.00.

The well diversified Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) producer Hemas Holdings as up by 2.00 to close at Rs108.50. Blue Chip John Keells Holdings added 50 cents to close at Rs 133.50.
Dialog Telekom lost 25 cents to close at Rs 5.25 while Sri Lanka Telecom slipped 50 cents to close at Rs 42.50.

There were 79 losers & 49 gainers during the trading day. Foreigners bought Rs 74.4 million worth of stocks & sold stocks valued Rs 49.8 million.

Market outlook is positive & investors were selectively buying stock which may benefit from post war construction boom.

ASI slipped 2.58 points to close at 2525.04 while MPI closed 6.94 points higher to close at 2883.80. Turnover was respectable at 452.2 million rupees. Hotel services (Ceylon) Plc was the highest contributor for today’s turnover with 146.5 million rupees.

07-Aug-2009 SERIOUS LOSS OF CAPITAL – Kshatriya Holdings PLC
The Company has informed the CSE, “it has been brought to the notice of the Board of Directors by the Group Finance Manager that the net assets of the Company are less than half the value of the Stated Capital of the Company. The Board shall therefore, as required by section 220 of the Companies Act No.7 of 2007 prepare a report dealing with the nature and extent of the losses, the causes of the losses incurred and the steps if any, being taken by the Board to prevent further losses or to recoup the losses and shall call an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Shareholders to discuss the said report.

An Extraordinary General Meeting of the shareholders shall be called on the 8th of October 2009 in order to discuss the report to be prepared by the Board and to discuss the financial position of the Company”.

Sri Lanka shares hit one year high in early trading but came down & closed 11.71 points higher at 2485.28 while MPI closed 24.55 points higher at 2773.63.

Turnover was Rs 657.5 million.

Aitken Spence Plc was up by 9.75 to close at Rs 639.75. Sri Lanka’s largest finance company Central Finance Plc gained 3.50 to close at Rs 228.50.

Chevron Lubricant Lanka Plc was up by two rupees & 50 cents to close at Rs 125.75. State controlled Housing Development Finance Cooperation (HDFC) closed 3.50 higher at Rs 88.00.

Lanka Cement (LCEM) gained 4.25 on 1.9 million shares & closed at Rs 36.75. LCEM factory was situated in north of Sri Lanka where raw materials for cements are freely available. Lanka Cement factory was closed due to civil war prevailed past three decades. Investors were optimistic on reopen of cement factory as civil war completely ended.

Colombo Dockyard which was on upward path for last few weeks lost 1.25 today & closed at Rs 116.75.
Distilleries Co lost one rupee to end at Rs 87.00.

Asian stocks continued their week long fall today, most markets down 2% or more as more negative news coming in from world economy. Japan Nikkei 225 lost 2.4%.

Colombo ASI & MPI both lost 15 points each to close at 2376.22 & 266719 respectively. Turnover was Rs 172.7 million.

Ceylinco Insurance gained 14.75 to close at Rs 200.00. Plantation related stocks improved little bit with retail interest.

Eagle Insurance lost eleven rupees to close at Rs 140.00. John Keells Holdings was down by one rupee to end at Rs 132.50. Samapth Bank ended the day three rupees lower at Rs 106.00.

Foreign funds are not willing to invest in equities in big way due to unclear economic environment around the globe.
