Trading activity – 08th October 2009.

Sri Lanka shares managed to close slightly higher with selling pressure. ASI was up by 4.17 points to close at 3120.73 but MPI lost 1.32 points to close at 3527.70. Turnover was impressive at Rs 1.63 billion.

Recently concluded IPO, Hemas Power (Assigned Code HPWR.N0000) started trading today & 9,531,500 shares traded. HPWR closed four rupees higher than issued price at Rs 24.00.

Tokyo Cement was up by 10.25 to close at Rs 224.75. Brown & Company Plc gained 5.75 to close at Rs 71.75 & 1,132,900 shares traded.

Colombo Dockyard still trading strong & closed three rupees higher at Rs 172.50. Hatton National Bank Plc (HNB) was another company that was traded heavily with more than 2.9 million shares. HNB closed the day Rs 2.00 higher at Rs 172.00. Sri Lanka Telecom was up by 1.25 to close at Rs 47.00.

Lanka Ceramic Plc lost six rupees to end the day at Rs 50.25. Tangerine Beach Hotels Plc lost 2.25 to close at Rs 70.00.

Foreign investors were net buyers with Rs 703.4 million purchases & Rs 663.1 million sales. When considering sharp gains in past two weeks, Colombo Market may face technical correction within next few days.

Index heavy Dialog Telekom lost 50 cents (-5.71%) to close at Rs 8.25 & traded more than 3.4 million shares. Aitken Spence Plc gained 7.25 to close at Rs 895.50 while John Keells Holdings Plc (JKH) was up by two rupees to close at Rs 154.00. JKH alone contributed Rs 451.7 million towards total market turnover by trading 2,916,800shares.

Colombo Dockyard was up by 3.50 to close at Rs 169.50. Dipped Products Plc gained 4.25 to close at Rs 92.75. Nation Lanka Finance Plc (Formally Ceylinco Securities & Financial Services ) was up by Rs 2.00 to close at 29.75.

Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings Plc was down by 4.00 to close at Rs 234.00. Nuwara Eliya Hotels Plc lost ten rupees to close at Rs 410.00. Distiliries Company of Sri Lanka Plc controlled by business tycoon Mr. Harry Jayawardana closed unchanged at 91 rupees.

Colombo ASI index fluctuated heavily in early trading & closed 29.32 points higher at 3127.56 while Milanka index gained 38.61 points to close at 3547.38. Turnover was 1.18 billion rupees. According to Yahoo Finance The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has lifted its official cash rate target by 25 basis points to 3.25% after holding it at 3% since April 8. This move can be considered an early sign of recovery from economic recession.

Chevron Lubricant, subsidiary of US oil giant Chevron Texaco was up by 14.50 to close at Rs 179.50. The highly profitable liquor producer, Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka Plc closed 1.50 higher at Rs 90.75.

There were significant gains reported in Banks Finance & Insurance sector. Central Finance Company Plc was up by 5.75 to close at Rs 311.75. Commercial Bank of Ceylon closed the day three rupees higher at Rs 179.25 while Sampath Bank Plc gained 2.50 to close at 182 rupees. Hatton National Bank voting shares was up by 2.25 to close at Rs 169.75 while its nonvoting shares closed four rupees higher at Rs 90.00.
John Keells Holdings Plc closed flat at Rs 154.00. Foreigners bought Rs 138.2 million worth of stocks & sold stocks valued Rs 230.4 million.

Brokers said investors were extremely optimistic with lower inflation and falling interest rates.

Colombo All Share Index is near record high of 3038.48 points, hit on February 19th 2007. Today ASI closed at 3018.01, up20.41. More liquid MPI closed the day 42 points higher at 33994.86. Turnover was 1.07 billion rupees. Following stocks traded in larger quantities.

Seylan Merchant Bank Nonvoting, 18,573,700 shares traded & closed at 80 cents, up 10 cents.

Tess Agro 11,949,400 shares traded & closed at Rs 1.50, up 10 cents.

Colombo Land 9,162,900 shares traded & closed at seven rupees, up 25 cents.

Dialog Telekom 4,411,800 shares traded & closed at seven rupees, up 25 cents.

Diversified Blue Chip Aitken Spence closed the day Rs 20.75 higher at Rs 891.25 while its subsidiary Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings Plc gained 7 rupees to close at Rs 239.50. Chevron Lubricant Lanka Plc, subsidiary of US based oil giant Chevron Texaco was up by 10 rupees to close at Rs 165.00.

In Banks Finance & insurance sector, Sampath Bank posted Rs 8.50 gain to close at Rs 179.50. Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc was up by 2.25 to close at Rs 176.25 while DFCC was up by one rupee to close at Rs 153.00.

Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka Plc managed to close at Rs 89.00, up two rupees. Illiquid Shalimar (Malay) Plc gained Rs 140.00 to close at 800 rupees but only on 100 shares.

SSP Corporate Services (Private) Limited has notified the CSE that the Seylan Bank PLC – Public offering of ordinary voting shares for 54,290,000 ordinary voting shares has been oversubscribed at an issue price of Rs. 35/-.

Therefore, the issue would be closed at 4.30 p.m. today (October 02, 2009) as per the prospectus. The basis of allotment will be notified to the CSE in due course.

The company has released the following announcement to the CSE:

“Please be informed that Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka PLC (MBSL) has made an investment in Ceylinco Investment Company Limited (CICL) by infusing fresh capital amounting to Rs. 5,000,000. CICL has issued 500,000 ordinary shares against this investment at a price of Rs. 10/- per share. Consequent to this transaction, MBSL holds 46% of the issued shares of CICL.

Ceylinco Investment Company Ltd. has 37% holding in The Finance Company PLC which is currently being managed by MBSL on a mandate received from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. ”

Colombo Stock Market closes higher.

ASI crossed the 3000 point mark during the trading session today but closed slightly lower at 2997.60, up 58.6 points. Milanka index closed the day 55.43 points higher at 3352.86. Turnover was Rs 1.12 billion.

Large parcels (7,636,600 shares) of Colombo Land & Development Company Plc traded today within price range of Rs 5.50 to 7.25 & closed one rupee higher at Rs 6.75. Dialog Telekom also received investor attention & more than 3.6 million shares traded. Dialog closed at Rs 6.75, up 25 cents.

In Hotel sector Aitken Spence Hotel Holding Plc gained 12.75 to close at Rs 232.50 while Confifi Hotel Holdings closed 10 rupees higher at Rs 148.00. Hotel Sigirya Plc was up by Rs 6.25 to close at Rs 61.25.

There was significant buying support for Bank Finance & Insurance stocks. Union Assurance was up by 17 rupees to close at Rs 106.00. Central Finance Plc gained 8.50 to close at Rs 308.50. Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc closed at Rs 174.00, up 2.75.

Blue Chip John Keells Holdings was up by two rupees to close at Rs 153.00. Distilleries also gained two rupees to close at Rs 87.00. There were 115 gainers & only 32 negative contributors reported during the trading session.

The indices at Colombo Stock Exchange closed higher with ASI closing 25.39 points higher to end at 2938.64 while the Milanka index closed up 37.47 points to end the day at 3297.43. Turnover was Rs 1.2 billion boosted by 33.5 million shares of Seylan Bank nonvoting, amounted to Rs 537.5 million. Seylan nonvoting closed the day 1.25 higher at Rs 16.50.

Ceylon Tobacco posted gains of Rs 9.75 to close at 180 rupees. Index heavy Dialog Telekom closed at Rs 6.50, up 25 cents. Aitken Spence Hotel holdings Plc was up by 7.75 to close at 219.75 while its parent company Aitken Spence Plc lost 32.25 to close at Rs 852.75.

Alliance Finance Plc was up by Rs 50.50 to close at Rs 398.00 while Central Finance Plc closed the day 3.75 higher at Rs 300.00. Hatton National Bank Plc gained 1.25 to end the day at Rs 164.50.

There were gains in Plantation companies despite recent wage hike. Agalawatte Plantation Plc was up by 1.50 to close at 23.50. Balangoda Plantation closed the day one rupee higher at Rs 23.25. Elpitiya Plantations Plc closed at Rs 56.25, up Rs 3.25. Hapugastenne Plantations Plc ended the day at Rs 35.25, up 2.25.

Tokyo Cements was up by 4.50 to close at Rs 192.00 on 223,600 shares while Lanka Cements gained 1.25 to close at Rs 30.25. Lanka Ceramic Plc closed at Rs 54.00, up 6.25.

September 29th 2009.

Colombo All Share (ASI) index was up by 19.61 points to close at 2913.25 while the Milanka index which represents high liquid stocks gained 10.21 points to close at 3259.96. Turnover improved to Rs 729.4 million compared to previous day‘s Rs 326.8 million.

There was a little improvement in Banks Finance & Insurance sector stocks as Ceylinco Insurance gained 19.00 rupees to close at Rs 240.00 while Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc was up by 2.25 to close at Rs 172.00. Seylan Bank’s ordinary voting shares gained 1.75 to close at Rs 36.25 while Nonvoting shares closed the day 1.50 higher at Rs 15.25.

Other stocks that seen price gains were, retail investor favorite Touchwood Investment Plc was up by 10.25 to close the day at Rs 99.25. Colombo Dockyard Plc gained 2.50 to close at Rs 160.00.

There were continuous gains evident in Carson Group of companies in past few days. The Bukit Darah Plc was up by Rs 98.25 to close at Rs 1598.25 while Carsons Cumberbatch Plc (Holding Company) was up by Rs 15.00 to close at Rupees 276.00.

29-Sep-2009 DIRECTIVE RELATING TO THE AUTHORIZED SIGNATORIES TO THE UNAUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS OF ALL STOCK BROKING AND STOCK DEALING COMPANIES

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) has issued a directive to the CSE, requiring the CSE to ensure that the authorized signatories to the Unaudited Financial Statements of all Broker Firms shall be a Director and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Firm.

In terms of the above directive, the Broker Firms must ensure that the monthly financial statements submitted by the Broker Firms to the CSE and SEC are signed by a Director and the CEO of the Firm.

Please note that this directive is operative with immediate effect and shall continue in operation until otherwise stated.

Colombo Indices managed to close the day with marginal gains despite ups & downs (fluctuations) within the trading session. ASI was up by 3.38 points to close at 2892.05 while Milanka Index closed the day at 3267.33, up 19.22 points. Turnover was Rs 436.2 million.

Heavy trading reported in troubled Ceylinco group of companies. Seylan Bank Nonvoting shares contributed Rs 90.2 million towards total market turnover by trading 6,934,800 shares & closed the day at Rs 13.25, up one rupee.

Tangerine Beach Hotel Plc was up by 2.75 to close at Rs 71.75. Dipped Products Plc gained 3.75 to close at Rs 87.25.

Aitken Spence Plc lost 13.00 to close at Rs 885.00. Conglomerate John Keells Holdings Plc was declined by 25 cents to close at Rs 152.75. More than 2.2 million Vallibel Power shares traded & closed the day 10 cents higher at Rs 4.10.

Accordingly, the shares allotted to SLIC as mentioned above constitute the 1st tranche of their total equity investment in Seylan Bank PLC of LKR 670,250,000/- represented by 19,150,000 ordinary (voting) shares in the Company.

Subscription to the second tranche of 6,383,000 shares (LKR 223,405,000/-) is due on or around 15th October 2009 and the third tranche of 6,384,000 shares (LKR 223,440,000/-) is due on or around 15th November 2009.

The 19,383,000 Ordinary (voting) shares allotted are expected to be listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) shortly upon submission of the Declaration to the CSE”.

The Company has informed the CSE, “that our client, Gulf East Finance Limited has purchased additional 1000 shares at LKR 74.50 per share on 22 September 2009 after triggering the Mandatory Offer on 18 September 2009.

With this purchase, the total holding of Gulf East Finance Limited in Singalanka Standard Chemicals PLC has increased to 30.49%”.
